Last week I participated in a NCCAT seminar titled, Sea, Sands and Human Hands. Throughout the week, we observed how human hands and the sea pertain to erosion. Each year the Outer Banks experience changes due to storms, hurricanes and developmental issues. It was very interesting being able to visit different locations up and down the Outer Banks and how the Ocracokers have had to rebuild or in some cases, give in to Mother Nature. Several roads, bridges and homes have been destroyed over the years and each year the locals discuss what is the best use of time and money to fix this everlasting problem.
I have lived in North Carolina my entire life and had never visited OBX. So not only did I get to visit a very neat place, but I was able to learn some history and facts about Ocracoke Island, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Kitty Hawk, Jockey's Ridge, Portsmouth Island and Springer's Point.
When we weren't walking on the beach, climbing Jockey's Ridge or riding the Cape Hatteras Ferry, we had lots of free time to walk around, visit the local shops and explore Ocracoke Island. One night about 20 of us teachers all went out to the infamous Howard's Pub. It was a great trip and I look forward to attending another seminar in the future! I'm having difficulty deciding between the Whitewater Rafting seminar or the Hiking Waterfalls and Watercolor seminar!
